Thrillers, Spillers, and Fillers—Blog Hop #42

Thrillers, Spillers, and Fillers

I love putting flowers in my four big pots in the backyard and putting the right combination of flowers can make quite a stunning display.  The concept of "thrillers, spillers, and fillers" is a great one to keep in mind when shopping for flowers.

This year I decided to plant two different configurations of flowers.  One configuration in two of the pots and another in the other two pots.  So, first I got Euryops for thrillers.  These have daisy-like flowers and grow tall and bushy.  Then I chose Verbena Lania "Candy Cane" for the spillers and Alyssum for the fillers.

For the other two pots, I chose Cathedral Deep Blue for thrillers and Bacopa for the spillers.  The Alysum will also be used as fillers in these two pots.

At first, the pots look a little puny, but in another month, they will all grow, spread, spill, and fill out the pots and look beautiful.

Here is one of my pots from last year:

For my flower boxes on the front porch, I used a thriller and a filler.  Gerbera daisies will serve as thrillers and purple and white petunias will eventually grow like crazy, filling in and spilling over the box.

Summer Wreath

As I wait anxiously for the wind to stop and the warm temperatures to arrive, I created this wreath to welcome the coming season.

I started with an 18" grapevine wreath and terra cotta pots I found at Michael's (four 3" pots, four 2" pots, and eight 1" pots).

I used twine to secure them tightly around the wreath.

In the 2" and 3" pots, I used a hot glue gun to secure pieces of floral foam.  I arranged silk flowers and used more glue to keep them in place.

Finally, I added sprigs of silk leaves.  I also glued dried Spanish moss in all of the pots.

And it was as easy as that.  It turned out to be pretty and a whole lot lighter than I thought it would be.

Weekend Blog Hop #40

Our crazy (but typical) weather continues here in Northern Arizona.  Yesterday my tulips were pummeled by hail.  Most of them made it through, but a few petals were lost.  (Can't wait for June!)

No Blog Hop This Week—Sorry!

Hey folks!  Due to the end of the semester and going to my my nephew's college graduation out of town, there will be no blog hop this week.  See you next Thursday!  --Jennifer
